騒々しく土足で上がり込んでくるオバケがいる。耳を塞いでも目を塞いでもそれは突然やってくる。お茶でも出してほっこり仲良くやりたいものだけれど、相手はそう思っていないようだ。こっちはにこにこしてそれが過ぎ去るまで、踏みにじられようがつつかれようがじっと待たなければならない.. 彼らが満足するまでは。

添田はそんな誰にでもある、大きな相手と小さな自分の間に生じる、社会的な、または性的なヒエラルキーの中でいつも「言い返す」ことが困難だと呟く。

この展覧会は、添田の新作で占められている。添田による、取れたてほやほやの、理不尽なヒエラルキーへ対抗するための迎撃のイメージ。それは少しだけ、小さな自分が大きな相手に対してNoを表現するための勇気を授けてくれる。

There is a ghost that barges in, loud and wearing muddy boots. Even if you cover your ears or shut your eyes, it arrives without warning. You might want to serve it a cup of tea and find a quiet way to get along, but the other side clearly has no such intention. So you just have to sit tight with a smile, enduring being trampled or poked, waiting for it to pass... until they are finally satisfied.

Soeda murmurs that within these societal or sexual hierarchies—which exist between a towering presence and one's small self, experienced by everyone—it is always difficult to answer back.

This exhibition is composed of Soeda’s latest works. Freshly harvested images of interception, crafted by Soeda to resist these unreasonable hierarchies. They grant us just a bit of courage for our small selves to say "No" to that overwhelming presence. (Text: Chiaki Ishizuka)
